While a contrarian mindset is essential for stepping outside the box, not all contrarian ideas are created equal. They don't become successful merely because they're different. The 'right' contrarian ideas are those that, while going against the grain, are based on insightful observations and sound reasoning.
The thing to understand is that we reject consensus in the pursuit for better. You don’t achieve great performance in anything by following the herd. True innovators are contrarians, non-consensus driven. This is the most misunderstood and hardest part of being an innovator: you have to be willing to be wrong and break away from the herd.
A contrarian is a strategist -- always thinking long-term. Competitive advantage lies in setting oneself up in the future. The contrarian mindset is about being comfortable with discomfort. It’s not about being different for the sake of being different, it’s about finding truth in places that others aren’t looking.
Kear is a (somewhat) reformed serial entrepreneur, risk-taker, and adventurer who is as passionate about living life to the fullest as he is about achieving success in business. Kear believes his best quality and biggest strength lies in his ability to connect with others. His personal history, experiences, and achievements are both wide and wild. Some unique (non-business-related) highlights of his life and experiences include meeting celebrities and cowboys, working with well-known athletes, and even once meeting the president of the United States (briefly). He has flown airplanes, jumped out of planes, jumped off high cliffs into deep waters. From motorcycle accidents in Honduras, to exploring underwater caves in the Mediterranean, winning grueling sailboat races on the Chesapeake and fighting off multiple attackers in a back-alley in Rome, Kear has lived an incredibly interesting life. He once lost a national treasure (for the better part of a day) and he's worn bullet-proof vests on late night stakeouts. He owned a wild mustang (named "Buffy") and he's broken horses and trained parrots. Previously married, now single, a date night might include a ride in a helicopter, or a masquerade ball at the French Embassy, or both. By age 12 he could fire a cannon, wire demolition explosives, drive cars, motorcycles, and tractor-trailer trucks as-well as operate bulldozers and heavy equipment. He's ridden Picket's Charge at full gallop (sadly without sabers) and he's enjoyed fox hunting with horns, horses, and hounds followed by champagne brunch at the country club. He's thrown parties for hundreds and events for thousands, he taught the fox-trot and cha-cha to seniors while wearing tuxedos, and he's lead country line dancing with a cowboy hat and boom-mic at the local country bar. Kear once named a racehorse (Low-Cal) and made the front page of the newspaper for catching a bullfrog at a horse show (oddly). Kear is a marksman with both bow and rifle, and he is a skilled artist, writer, amateur photographer, amateur chef, and a former professional disc-jockey and one-time late night radio personality. He's been an accomplished skateboarder, and a competitive snowboarder, and grew up playing ice hockey and soccer. He's been a competitive sailor and equestrian rider and so much more that some of it (frankly) just isn't fit to share publicly for various reasons. Essentially, if you can imagine it, he's probably done it, or he came really close to doing it, or is (likely) currently planning to do it or is (quite possibly) doing it now (lord help us).
Not surprisingly, he's fielded several offers to write a book about his life and he's promised family and friends that he'll do exactly that someday.
Today, Kear lives a (comparatively) quiet life in Baltimore, and he and his children enjoy boating on the Chesapeake Bay in the summer, and they enjoy snowboarding and winter sports in the colder months (and we're hoping that is enough for now)...
... Ok well, technically there was a small incident where his boat sank not too long ago, the cause is still somewhat of a mystery, but he's quick to point out that nobody was hurt in the incident, and everyone was perfectly safe (well, except for the boat of course) ... we did say it's a "comparatively" quiet life...
Perhaps no surprise, his favorite quote is from a Jimmy Buffet song... "Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I've had a good life all the way"
